Importance of Kumbh Mela
‘Kumbh’ means pitcher. According to a story in Satyuga (one of the eras in the Hindu mythology), once the deities and the demons decided to churn out the sea in order to get the precious gems exist in it. They placed ‘Mandranchal Parvat’ (a huge mountain)’ as a churner at the center of the sea and wrapped ‘Vasuki Naag’ (a giant python) around the mountain. Holding the edges of the python the deities and demons started churning the sea vigorously. After sometime different things appeared in the sea including Kalpavriksha (a tree), Airawat (an elephant) goddess Lakshmi, Halahal Vish( poison) etc. At last Amrit ( nectar) came out of the sea. Both the groups stopped churning and ran to grab the pitcher of the nectar. While this clash among the deities and the demons a few drops of nectar strewed at four places. These four places are Haridwar, Prayag(Alahbad), Nasik and Ujjain where Mahakumbh is celebrated. According to the Indian astrology Amavasya, Purnima and Sankranti are the most effective days of a month as these days the positions of the planets make special effects in our life. Thus having bath on these days in Kumbh Mela becomes more significant as the nectar gets active in the pious river Ganges.
